How do they Reshape the Alveolar Bone for Dentures?

Posted on 8/15/2016 by Keith M. Cooper
A pair of dentures floating inside of a glass jar. When a patient decides to use dentures as their chosen tooth replacement method; the alveolar or jaw bone can be reshaped to make a better setting. By having the patients jaw bone smoothed, it provides a more comfortable fit for dentures.

Before the placement of your denture, reshaping the bone ridge of your jaw will optimize the shape of the bone to allow for a more secure fit, and help the patient avoid complications with the placement of their denture, it will also provide more stability and retention. If reshaping is performed in association with the patient's tooth extractions, we can establish a jawbone shape that will assist in facilitating the healing process.

The Process
Alveoloplasty, or reshaping the alveolar bone, is performed in office and typically considered a minor surgical procedure. The procedure will begin with a local anesthetic, in most cases this is sufficient, in more complicated cases, we may offer other forms of sedation. The rest of the procedure is as follows:

•  The process begins with exposing the bone to trim and adjust as needed. This process includes irrigating the area with water and saline to wash away debris and keep the bone hydrated and cool, we don't want to damage the living tissue. Small lumps are adjusted to smooth the bone surface. For some patients, we may need to compress a protruding ridge to give it the necessary shape.
•  With the area now prepared, we will close the surgical site with sutures. We will ask to see you in one to two weeks to check on healing.

With the area prepared and healed, we can continue the process of constructing a denture device that will fit comfortably and with more stability in your mouth.
