What Is Prosthodontics?

A diagram of how a dental bridge works.Prosthodontics is the replacement of missing teeth. Prosthodontic procedures include the placement of dental veneers, crowns, inlays, onlays, bridges, complete and partial dentures and tooth implants to serve as replacement of a single or multiple missing teeth.

A prosthodontist is a dentist who has chosen to specialize in the placement of these restorations for both esthetics and function. Their specialty comes from time spent after dental school in training and education specifically in this area, working in hospitals and clinics. Prosthodontics is one of nine specialties that is recognized by the American Dental Association.

Replacement Options

When a patient has one or more teeth missing, there begins a series of events of additional oral health related problems. From teeth shifting out of place, to jaw bone atrophy, the domino effect of problems can lead to even more. Treatment options include:

•  The placement of dental veneers, a thin porcelain shell designed to cover the face surface of a tooth, hiding chips and allowing us to give a perfectly straight, even, and correctly sized look.
•  The placement of dental crowns, placed to provide added strength and to shield the original tooth from further damage.
•  To fill in the space of missing teeth using a dental bridge. We can stop teeth from shifting, improve your bite and your aesthetics with a dental bridge.
•  To replace multiple or all of your missing teeth with a permanent dental denture. In a variety of options, we can help you eat and speak much more naturally with the placement of a denture.
•  To replace a single, multiple or even all of your teeth with a dental implant. We can restore a tooth where one is missing by placing a titanium device that resembles a screw, directly into your jawbone and then place a dental crown on top. This will give you the look, feel, and function of your natural teeth.

Maxillofacial prosthetics is a super specialty of Prosthodontics. This includes performing surgical procedures along with the placement of prosthetics. This is an area of dental care that a patient receives due to birth defects, or congenital defects of the head and neck region, for patients who require prosthetics due to cancer, surgery or trauma.
