Denture Myths and the Real Truth behind Them

A pair of dentures inside of a glass jar.Dentures are removable appliances that are used to replace missing teeth in order to restore the smile, and for many people, they are extremely successful at doing so. Sadly, many people who wear dentures believe some denture myths that simply aren't true, and by dispelling these issues, you can better care for your teeth and your dentures.

After You Have Dentures, You Won't Need to See a Dentist

One of the most common myths about dentures is that you won't need to continue seeing a dentist after you receive your appliance. Unfortunately, this is completely false. Since your mouth is changing constantly, you need to see your dentist for regular checkups.

You mouth tissue can reveal signs of diabetes and other diseases that may manifest in the mouth, and your dentist can also look for signs of oral cancer and other oral health problems.

Everyone Will Know if You're Wearing Dentures

This myth can certainly be true if you invest in dentures that appear unnatural, but with technology today, dentures are looking more and more like real teeth. Regular professional exams, following instructions set up by your dentist, and proper home care can assure natural appearance by preventing many tell-tale signs of wearing dentures, including stains, slipping, or clicking.

Dentures Last Forever

It is important to note that one set of dentures is not going to last for an entire lifetime. While dentures are quite durable, they will need to be replaced periodically. Dropping your dentures even a couple of inches can result in a break, and even the most conscientious of denture wearers will need replacements if the appliance loses its chewing ability to age or brushing.

Dentures Will Require Me to Change My Diet

Most people who wear dentures can eat everything that they want, and many have very few dietary restrictions. If you develop a problem with eating at any time, it is important for your dentist to check the fit of your appliance right away to correct any issues.
