Types of Bone Graft

Posted on 8/20/2015 by Keith M. Cooper
A woman preparing a bone graft for a patient.Sometimes our patients need a bone graft before they can have dental implants placed in their mouth. This is for the benefit of the patient as dental implants will not take if there is not adequate bone in place. A bone graft is not as excruciating as the name might make it sound - it is a normal routine in our office and has helped hundreds of patients achieve the smile and function of their teeth that they desire.

Different Options
There are several options for us to obtain the bone to graft in your mouth. The most common method is autogenous bone grafting. This is the process of taking bone from your own body and placing it in the area with bone loss. The bone typically comes from your chin or lower jaw and has the highest success rate since it is your own bone that is being grafted back into your mouth.

If you do not have adequate bone for us to use during the procedure, we also have the option to use a procedure called allograft. This procedure involves using synthetic or donor bone. The donor bone is typically taken from a cadaver. In the least likely cases, we can also use a procedure called xenograft, which allows us to use cow bone to graft into your mouth.

We will discuss your options with you when determining the proper type of bone graft to use that will provide you with the best results. During any procedure we will ensure your ultimate comfort and use the bone grafting procedure that will allow you to obtain dental implants in the near future.

Please contact us if you have any questions about bone grafts.
