Why is a Bone Graft is Necessary Before a Dental Implant?

A diagram of a dental implant.Dental implants provide a great alternative for missing teeth. More and more patients are turning to this advance in dental technology, but many are finding that they are in need of a bone graft before they can be a candidate for dental implants.

Bone grafts help to build up the bone, giving the dental implant something to hang onto and remain stable in your mouth. Without proper bone, you might not be a candidate for this tooth replacement option.

Following are the top reasons that bone grafts are necessary:

1.  It has been a while that your teeth have been missing. When you lose your teeth, the bones in your mouth lose the stimulation that they had when the teeth were present. When bones are not stimulated, they begin to deteriorate, leaving you with less bone in your mouth for the implants to adhere to.
2.  You had gum disease. If you suffered from gum disease, even if it has been treated, you could have suffered some bone loss. As the pockets in your gums become larger, they offer more room for bacteria to enter and settle into the bones, causing damage to the tissue and eventual bone loss.

The good news is that even if you have suffered bone loss and need bone grafting, you could still be a candidate for dental implants. Bone grafting is a simple and successful procedure that builds your bone back up, allowing dental implants to permanently fuse to your bone and become a natural part of your mouth.
